About & disclosures

Who we are, how this is made, and who pays for it.

Written so that nothing about this desk has to be discovered. If you find something we should have disclosed and did not, write to the publisher and it goes on the corrections page.

What this is

A small data desk that shows its work

WhatsTheHost Research publishes standing indexes and short data notes on the electricity economics of AI data centers in the United States: what it costs to power a megawatt of compute in each market, what the grid can carry, what prices are doing, and what regulators and system operators are deciding. Every number is computed from public federal or system-operator data by code we publish, or is traced to the exact sentence of the source it came from. Every opinion carries a named reasoning model, a dated falsifier, and the strongest counter-argument we could find.

And a prototype, which we say out loud

The first public deployment of a research harness

Green Flag Digital builds and runs the harness behind this desk: AI desks that gather, compute, verify, audit and draft under a human publisher who signs every release. WhatsTheHost Research is where that harness is tested in public. Its errors, audits and forecasts are published and scored in the open, because that is the product: a research operation whose work anyone can check. If you are a reporter, read this site as a data source that shows its work, built by people whose business depends on the work holding up.

Who

The people and the desks

Publisher
Joe Robison. Joe is the founder of Green Flag Digital, a San Diego digital marketing agency working in SEO, digital PR and content, and has worked in search and content marketing for more than a decade. He owns and publishes WhatsTheHost.com. He is not an energy economist and does not claim to be one; his role here is to run the desk, read every ledger, and sign or refuse each release. Where this site is wrong, he is the one accountable for it. Reach him at joe@greenflagdigital.com. He answers reporters' questions about any figure on this site the same day, and he is the person to quote.
Operator
Green Flag Digital (San Diego), which owns WhatsTheHost.com and builds and operates the research harness that runs this desk. The desk is built and run by its founder with AI agents; the agency's contractors handle relationships and outreach where a human should. Green Flag Digital's business is running that harness for other organizations.
Editorial staff
The desks listed on the front page — managing editor, assignment desk, beat reporter, data desk, fact-check, ombudsman, copy desk, art desk, syndication — are AI agents. Each runs under a written role description, a source registry it may draw from, and eleven standing rules. They have persona names so that responsibility for each stage of a story is legible. They are not people, and nothing on this site should be read as a human expert's opinion unless a named human is quoted with a document.
Reviewers
None signed yet. We are seeking two to three named reviewers: one on utility rates and tariffs, one on grid operations, one on data center development. Reviewers are paid for their time, read the methodology and one full story with its ledgers, and their names go on the methodology page with the date. A reviewer's name means they found the method sound, not that they endorse every finding.

How a story is made

Five gates, then a signature

Then a human publisher reads the ledgers and signs, or does not. Full method on the methodology page.

1

Capture

Every source gets an ID and a tier. Trade press never headlines.

2

Evidence

Every cited sentence is re-fetched live and deep-linked at the sentence.

3

Claim ledger

Every fact: ID, verbatim or null, status, discrepancy, standing action.

4

Inference ledger

Every opinion: the model it borrows, a dated falsifier, who disagrees.

5

Adversarial audit

Two hostile reviewers, defects only, findings published with the story.

The morning run is scheduled. Each weekday the desks scan the beat, run the standing instruments, audit, and stage everything for the publisher. Nothing is published, sent or posted from a scheduled run; the publisher releases each story by hand. Draft text is produced by AI and edited by the publisher; where the publisher's own words appear they are his.

Money

Who pays, and what we get out of it

Funding

This desk is funded by Green Flag Digital and by WhatsTheHost.com, whose main site earns affiliate commissions when readers buy web hosting through its reviews. No affiliate links, sponsorships, advertising or paid placements appear on the research site, and no company covered here has paid for coverage, been offered coverage for payment, or been shown a story before publication except under the embargo terms on the press page. What we get out of it: the research earns citations and links that raise the standing of the parent site, and it proves out, in public, the research harness Green Flag Digital operates for other organizations.

The research pages carry no calls to action for hosting products and never will. If that changes, this paragraph changes first.

Vendors and conflicts

The AI agents that run the desks are built on Anthropic's Claude models, operated through Anthropic's tools. Anthropic is also a company whose $50 billion data center investment announcement is cited in the Power Index (claim C-059). We have no commercial relationship with Anthropic beyond paying for its products, and no Anthropic employee has seen or influenced any story. We note the overlap because a careful reader would.

WhatsTheHost.com reviews web hosting companies, some of which operate data centers. None is scored or named in the Power Index, which ranks metros, not companies. Green Flag Digital's client work is in cybersecurity and travel; whether any client is affected by a story is disclosed on request to any reporter who asks, and if a client is ever in the electricity, data center or utility business it will be stated on this page.

What we will not do

We will not publish a number we cannot trace to a source sentence or to our own published code. We will not attribute a position to a living person without a document. We will not put a paraphrase inside quotation marks. We will not accept payment for placement, ranking, or coverage of any company. We will not use vendor-supplied data without labelling it as such. We will not invent first-person experience. We will not quietly fix a mistake; see the corrections policy.

Contact

Publisher and press: joe@greenflagdigital.com. A dedicated press phone line for this desk is being set up and will be published here; until then email is fastest and is answered the same day.

Corrections: same address with the word "correction" in the subject line. Data requests, embargo requests and interview requests: same address. We do not use contact forms.
